As you can tell, school being in session = lack of entries
from me. So this is going to be another
one of those long-ish, rambling entries. I hope you don’t mind, but as much as we have this site for all of you,
I also use it as a sort of baby/memory book for Daniel…so while I have a minute
to sit down and write, I want to make sure I get in all the good Daniel stories
and updates I have.
I will start first with school updates…. Report card last week…all E’s (equivalent to
all A’s)….prior to Christmas, Daniel was tested for giftedness and score
exceptionally well, so after the Winter break he started in the school system’s
gifted and talented program. He goes to
a special class 3 hours each week with other gifted children from his
school. Although it’s only been 3
classes so far, the difference it’s made in Daniel’s confidence level and the
abilities it has brought out in him are amazing. He brought home logic puzzles that they had
done this week, which just floored me! It’s been difficult trying to figure out how to keep Daniel challenged
without pushing him too hard and I think this class is the perfect first step
in helping us find a direction to go….
Allergies….we had our appointment with the allergist a
couple of weeks ago (when I say “we” I do mean Daniel, but with this whole
allergy/constant stuffiness/coughing/dry skin thing, we (David and I) feel like we’re on a mission to figure out
what the heck is causing all this, so it’s a family effort). The first round of testing (skin test) was
pretty inconclusive…we learned that Daniel is definitely allergic to cats, not
allergic to dogs (yay for Negley!) and somewhat allergic to some trees and mold
(who isn’t?). There was a very slight
reaction to wheat, but that could be caused by a grass pollen allergy. So, they did blood work and we go back in
February to find out the results of that….
Other activities….we (again, I mean Daniel) are in the
process of signing up (and writing checks to…that’s where the “we” part comes in)
for summer camps (day camps). He has
picked two that each last a week long…one is at his school and is science based
and the other is just a traditional summer day camp…swimming, hiking, kickball,
arts and crafts. We also signed up
yesterday for T-Ball…although we’ve been informed that most of the coaches
don’t use a tee anymore?? T-(less) Ball
(isn’t that just extremely slow-pitch baseball?) runs from April-June with two
games a week…one during the week in the evening and one of the weekend, so get ready
to come to games and cheer for The __________ (we don’t know what team we’re on
yet)…..
Funny Daniel stories….there is a commercial on TV for an
awning, maybe you’ve seen it….the Sunsetter Retractable Awning. Daniel is totally obsessed with getting one
of these. He is drawn into their claims
that it will keep him cool in the summer and protect him from the sun’s harmful
UV rays. He comes to me and says, “Mama! It will keep me cool in summer!” I tell him we don’t get that much sun in our
backyard anyway. Then he’ll say,
“Mama!?! It will protect me from the
sun’s harmful UV rays!!” Like I have no
concern for his fair skin and if I don’t get this awning I am pretty signing
off on him having sun damage for the rest of his life. I tell him that we have sunscreen to put on
him and then he says, with even more urgency than before, “But Mama!! It is a limited time offer. LI-MI-TED TIIIMMME…..it will only cost you
$700, but you have to call NOW!!” It
then takes me a few minutes to explain to him all the reasons we don’t need one
of these awnings before I can get him distracted and on to another
subject. But, it starts all over again
anytime the commercial comes on. We’ve also
had similar conversations regarding Life Alert (the I’ve fallen and I can’t get
up! button) and Temperpedic mattresses (“But Mama! I will get better sleep!!”)…..
Looking at my calendar for this week, it seems as if I don’t
have too much going on, so maybe I will be able to update with a little more
frequency and possibly post some new pictures. Until then, have a good week and stay warm (and wish for snow!).
